A Better Chicago WOOOO provides a better day for the young people in our city.

Like you, we believe that everyone deserves a quality education. But the reality is many students do not wake up to the same sunrise. Some walk to school with the weight of the world in their backpacks, with knowledge hinging upon tattered textbooks that are missing pages. Many of the young people we serve must overcome so many obstacles before they even make it to the classroom.

Emmanuel Williamson is a senior at Daniel Hale Williams College Prep. He joined our grantee organization, Chicago Scholars during his junior year of high school. On this day, he is participating in their College fair “Onsite,” which gives Chicago students an opportunity to receive on the spot admission into the most prestigious institutions in the nation. On his face is a smile that would brighten the gloomiest day. He had just been accepted into The University of Missouri and would be the first person in his family to ever go to college.

I came from nothing. There were days when I felt like giving up. It’s extremely hard to know you have what it takes to be great, but not have any idea how to achieve it. Chicago Scholars would never let me give up. This fair made me realize I am someone.
— Emmanuel Williamson

A better day means giving every student an equal opportunity to succeed. These bright young minds should never have to feel left in the dark. Great things happen when you invest in the education of young people, and that is why we need YOU

In the coming weeks we will be sharing stories of amazing students being positively impacted by A Better Chicago and your generous contributions. We need your continued support to remind our young people what it feels like to wake up to a better day.
