State of Youth Mental Health

Join A Better Chicago on Tuesday, November 17 for an event exploring the State of Youth Mental Health.

According to our annual citywide youth survey, 95% percent of Chicago youth say mental health is a serious issue affecting their peers, with anxiety, depression, and stress shaping their ability to engage and attend school consistently. While access to school-based mental health supports has grown, critical gaps remain.

This conversation will examine how schools, families, nonprofits, and communities can build belonging, strengthen relationships, and support young people’s wellness. We’ll hear from leaders across education, behavioral health, and community organizations, and share ways to build more supportive, inclusive learning environments.

The discussion will be moderated by Steve Beard, CEO of Covista — America’s largest healthcare educator — and Chair of A Better Chicago’s Board.

Panelists will include:

  • Dr. Colleen Cicchetti, Executive Director, Center for Childhood Resilience, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

  • Dr. Catherine Whitfield Martin, Executive Director, Office of Social Emotional Learning, Chicago Public Schools

  • Vero Ortiz, LCSW, Chief Program Officer, Enlace Chicago

  • Kyren Gonzalez, Student, George Washington High School

Location: mHUB,1623 W. Fulton, Chicago.

Time: Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for a breakfast reception, with the program beginning promptly at 9 a.m.
