KIPP is a national network of charter schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. KIPP Chicago operates a network of seven charter schools serving K-8 students as well as KIPP Through College, a program that provides services to help KIPP charter school alumni succeed in high school and college. This year, the organization is serving 3,400 students, with 2,400 attending a KIPP Chicago charter school and 1,000 receiving support from KIPP Through College.
Why We Invested
KIPP Chicago is dramatically improving outcomes by providing its students with the preparation and support needed to succeed in high school and college. The most recent data demonstrates that KIPP Chicago alumni graduate high school at a rate of 82 percent, and 70 percent of KIPP high school graduates enroll in college and persist to their sophomore year. These compare to district rates of 78 percent and 47 percent, respectively. KIPP Chicago’s leadership team is a key driver of the organization’s success, both in terms of student outcomes and network expansion. At the helm of the organization is executive director April Goble, who has set a strong vision for the network and holds each school to high standards. Because of this leadership, KIPP Chicago leads the KIPP Network in percent of students meeting or exceeding typical growth on the Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures of Academic Progress testing.
By 2025, KIPP Chicago anticipates 4,000 students will attend a KIPP Chicago charter school and over 2,700 will be supported by KIPP Through College, broadening organizational impact to nearly 7,000 students. To support further growth, it will be critical for KIPP Chicago’s leadership to prioritize building external relationships to garner new supporters and continue developing its board. In addition, the organization will need to identify cost savings and implement strategies to raise additional revenue to ensure budget uncertainty does not inhibit scale or impact student achievement.
- Talent Recruitment Strategy: In 2018, KIPP Chicago worked with On-Ramps to recruit a Director of Development. A Better Chicago vetted search firms and covered 50 percent of the fees.
- Branding and Website Redesign: In 2017, KIPP Chicago work with a branding and design firm to refresh their brand identity and update their website. A Better Chicago vetted venders, supported with project management and covered 50 percent of the fees.
- Expansion support: In 2015, KIPP Chicago worked with an independent consultant to complete a proposal to open two new schools and expand a third campus in Chicago. A Better Chicago vetted consultants and covered 75 percent of the fees.
